Module summary
Advanced Topics in Chemistry is an optional module for students studying the MSc in Drug Discovery and Development and have taken the Chemistry pathway. Students will be required to study four examined topics of their choice (two per semester) from a selection of examined topics, and two coursework topics of their choice from a selection of coursework topics (either semester).Objectives
On completion of the module, students will have an advanced level of understanding of a selection of current topics of chemistry. They will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of multiple areas simultaneously and be able to explain and solve unseen problems of an advanced nature.Ultimately, the module will prepare them for research either in academia or industry by providing the students with the core basis of advanced knowledge they will require.
Learning outcomes
The students will have a broad understanding of a range of core areas of advanced chemistry and be able to solve unseen problems in these areas.
They will also be able to access the primary literature and use their knowledge to make a critical evaluation of this information.
Syllabus
Students will be required to study four free choice topics (two per semester) from a selection of examined topics, and two free choice topics (zero-two per semester) from a selection of coursework topics. The current nature of the module ensures that the topics will change sporadically, at present the topics offered include:

Private study
216h including 30h online study - quizzes, note-taking, additional reading and researchAt least six topics will have to be attended in order to complete the course (60 hours in total). Each student will undertake a total of two exams. These assessments, which will be take place in the January and May/June examination periods, will have one question per topic that is worth 25 marks in total.
Students will be presented with a wide range of advanced material and will be expected to spend considerable time consolidating the acquired knowledge. 237 hours is assigned to reading both the learning resources provided and additional related content, for topic comprehension, preparation for coursework assignments and exam revision.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
General feedback will be provided following each exam. Student specific feedback may be provided upon request.Individual topics will contain workshops in which feedback may be provided.
