Objectives
On completion of this module students should understand the fundamental principles of mechanics relevant to Civil Engineers which underlie subsequent courses in Structural Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and Geotechnics.Syllabus
1. Statics - the definition and concept of equilibrium.
2. Definition of forces, stresses and strains.
3. Elasticity, Hookes law, and the behaviour of simple spring systems.
4. Resolution and addition of forces.
5. Moments and couples.
6. Bending moments and couples.
7. Bending moments and shear forces - Gallileo's analysis of a beam, illustrate with BM and SF diagrams of a simple supported beam.
8. Centroids of area, the neutral axis and second moments area.
9. The Mohr's circle of stress.
10. The concept of plasticity.
11. Newton's law of motion.
