Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to:- Understand the nature of procurement management.
- Apply the key concepts of procurement management.
- Understanding alternative procurement strategies and how they apply to projects.
- Be aware of procurement management’s relevance to the management of programmes and of projects.
- Be aware of the relationship between procurement and contract strategies.

General learning outcomes (UK-SPEC):
- The ability to apply new concepts and methods (in the context of procurement management).
Specific learning outcomes (UK-SPEC):
- Knowledge and understanding of methods, tools and techniques relevant to procurement management; an appreciation of the limits of the various methods, tools and techniques. (Science & Mathematics).
- The ability to apply procurement management concepts and methods to facilitate solving procurement related problems to achieve better project delivery; the ability to synthesise, structure and present information. (Engineering Analysis).
- Knowledge and understanding of how to structure supply chains on projects. (Design).
- An awareness of the impact of these aspects through applying procurement management concepts on a multi-project case study. (Economic, legal, social, ethical and environmental context).
- Understanding current practice procurement management concepts and methods, taking into account client requirements, supply chain structures and project constraints, to deliver value for money projects. (Engineering Analysis).
- Additional General Skills (the ability to problem-solve and communicate through team working).
The module introduces students to the concepts of procurement management on projects and multi-projects. Alternative procurement strategies are introduced along with the procurement assessment criteria relevant in their selection. Supply chain structures are explored in relation to the various procurement strategies, including concepts such as Partnering. On completion of the module candidates should have the knowledge to select an appropriate procurement route and related procurement strategies, linked to business strategy and the structure of programmes and projects. Case based learning is adopted to reinforce the theoretical concepts introduced in class.
Syllabus
- Theory: Introduction to Procurement Management - Introduction, background and definitions, the strategic context of procurement. Application in a workshop: Information gathering, information processing and analysis.
- Theory: Procurement strategy selection – Identifying priorities and procurement assessment criteria (PAC). Apply in a workshop to a multi-project case study.
- Theory: Alternative Procurement Strategies – Traditional, Management Oriented, Integrated strategies introduced. Application in a workshop: Select the appropriate systems based on PAC’s and strategies available.
- Theory: Contract Strategies – Introduction to contract strategies, including tendering and payment systems. Apply in a workshop to a multi-project case study.
- Theory: Client Supply Chain Management and Partnering. Apply in a workshop to a multi-project case study.
- Theory: Procuring multi-projects. Apply in a workshop to a multi-project case study.
Delegates will be expected to take a proactive approach during a number of workshop sessions throughout the 4-day module.
