Module summary
This module is designed to introduce students to an understanding of the ontological and technological nature of photography. It will introduce photographic techniques based on the basic analogue and intermediate digital production and editing of images. The module will allow students to develop key analogue and digital photographic techniques and enable them to situate their own practice within broader cultural discourses. It will also develop ethical and legal frameworks and an awareness of risk within practice. It will be delivered through a combination of lectures, themed practical exercises, workshops and seminars.Objectives
The key objectives of this module are to:1. Introduce students to the principle techniques of digital photography and to develop key skills in relation to the capture and postproduction of digital photographs.
2. Introduce students to the history of dominant photographic practices.
3. Develop an understanding of the relationships between photographic tradition and their own practice.
4. Begin to place their own practice within broader cultural discourses.
Learning outcomes
On completing the module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the ontological and technical basis of photography.
2. Apply the principle techniques of basic analogue and digital photographic production and post production in their own photographic practice
3. Demonstrate ethical awareness in relation to photographic practice.
4. Contextualise and situate photographic practice within broader photographic traditions and cultural discourses.
Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Technical Skills – the ability to plan, manage and produce original photographic images, including proficiency in image editing and post production.
6. Decision making - the ability to make decisions based on the requirements of a brief and taking into account image ethics and health and safety considerations.
7. Critical thinking skills - the ability to think and communicate critically about their own photographic practice.
