Objectives
This module introduces you to key research perspectives and methods in media and communication and to the principles of research ethics. The module combines lectures, required readings, practical exercises in seminars to build skills, and assessments that promote reflection on the research process and the value of different research methods.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
1. Identify and describe a range of research methods used in media and communication study.
2. Devise a media and communication research question
3. Develop an appropriate methodology to address a media and communication research question
4. Critique research projects in terms of ethics and methodology
Syllabus
Lectures will introduce students to key research perspectives and methods in media and communication and to the principles of research ethics. Seminars offer opportunities to practice methods from the lectures, reflect on research ethics, and debate the pros, cons, and implications of different research perspectives and methods. Activities throughout the semester encourage the development of research skills and methodological awareness and will prepare students for the assessments.

Private study
Students are required to spend an estimated 8-hours per week on seminar preparation. The remaining private study time should be dedicated to preparing assessments.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
