Module summary
- Do you want a head start when you apply for summer or industrial year placement? - Want to increase your awareness of your own skills/interests and personal characteristics so that you can impress a future employer? This is a practical and highly participative module with local employer involvement run by the university's professional Careers Consultants. Assessments are continual, relevant and useful with no exams. - To do this module you don't need any previous experience or special skills. - To meet the learning outcomes no student will be permitted to join the module after the end of session 3.Objectives
By the end of this module students will have:- had the opportunity to reflect on their own learning and development and therefore will have developed a clearer picture of their own skills, interests and personal characteristics in relation to careers and work experience;
- understood what they need to do to develop their employability and be aware of the resources, support and opportunities available to do this;
- understood what they need to do to compete effectively in the job market;
- a greater awareness of the support available at the University of Leeds and how to make the most of it to improve their time at the University of Leeds;
- an understanding of the range of opportunities to gain work experience while they are a student and how and when to apply for them;
- developed a CV and Covering Letter;
- developed practical techniques for presentations and group work;
- an increased understanding of the range of ways in which the Careers Centre can help with their career planning and development at all stages in their degree programme.

Syllabus
This 10 credit module will cover the following over the eleven weeks
- Introduction to module, assessments & reflection
- The Graduate Marketplace. Gain a better understanding of the graduate employment market
- Look at the first destinations of Leeds graduates
- Researching resources and sources of support at University
- Presentation techniques Mini group non-assessed presentations
- Getting to know your values, skills and learning style
- CV how to prepare and make speculative applications
- Enhance your employability through work experience
- Action plan for future career planning
