Module summary
This module provides students with a theoretical framework and a set of practical skills that will enable them to undertake the specialist module and carry out an independent project.Objectives
This module develops students’ research and analytical skills and provides them with the skills that they will need to undertake the specialist modules in the second semester and the independent project in the third semester.- Provide practical problem-solving experience and skills relevant for colour design, material science and colour imaging.
- Enable exploration of technical literature relevant to one of the three key areas for the programme. Develop their understanding of academic writing.
- Address skills required to develop a strategy/ methodology in order to undertake an independent project in Semester 3.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Produce new or original work through exploration of technical literature
2. Develop understanding of relevant range of techniques that includes colour design, material science and colour imaging.
3. Synthesise and implement specific knowledge and skills to develop a methodology for an independent project.

4. Demonstrate effective written communication and visual presentation skills for the communication of academic knowledge.
5. Evaluate and use appropriate information sources to support the development of an independent research project.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative assessment will consist of a student submitting a sample of a draft section of the coursework to a tutor. They will receive either written or verbal feedback on this submission to help with the development of the rest of the coursework. Group feedback on the learning achieved during the session is also available in each seminar.Methods of assessment

The coursework will include research on the student’s area of innovation in colour subject. This will include both written content. Visual output will include illustration of the development of their ideas. Resits will be available for both components of the assessment, allowing students to resubmit either the coursework or visual output or both, dependent on marks achieved for each component.
