Module summary
This intensive Chinese language module is suitable for complete and false beginners. It progresses fast and aims to help students to improve all their four basic skills in a balanced way through a range of classes – lecture, drill and practicals. Students will be engaged in an interactive and communicative learning environment and work with both simplified Chinese characters (read, write and type) and traditional Chinese characters (read).Objectives
This module is designed for students who have limited or no previous exposure to Chinese. The objective of the module is to help students build a solid foundation of the four basic skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing in an interactive and communicative learning environment. Both simplified and full-form traditional Chinese characters are introduced. Students are required to read and write the former and to read the latter. Basic IT skills regarding typing Chinese characters are also introduced.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, successful students will be able to:
• Converse in Chinese in a culturally appropriate manner about some basic every-day topics, such as greetings, personal information, place and time, shopping and university life.
• Read and write about 500 simplified Chinese characters and also recognise these characters in the traditional form.
• Understand essential features of Chinese syntax and use the structures that have been introduced orally and in writing.
• Comprehend passages written in the characters that have been introduced on every-day topics.
• Write short compositions using simplified characters that have been introduced on basic every-day topics.
• Translate short dialogues and paragraphs on basic every-day topics using vocabulary and structures that have been introduced.
• Type Chinese characters when required in completing composition and translation tasks.
Syllabus
Integrated Chinese, Book 1 (published by Cheng & Tsui Company in the USA) is used as the textbook for this module.
