Module summary
This intensive Japanese language module is suitable for complete beginners, as well as those who have limited knowledge of the language. It progresses fast and aims to help students to improve all their four basic skills in a balanced way through lectures and practicals. Students will be engaged in an interactive and communicative learning environment.Objectives
This module is designed for students who have limited or no previous exposure to Japanese. The objective of the module is to help students build a solid foundation of the four basic skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing in an interactive and communicative learning environment.Learning outcomes
1. Be familiar with standard Japanese pronunciation and with both Japanese syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) and basic Japanese kanji
2. Be able to understand and reproduce the essential features of Japanese grammar
3. Be able to read short texts in Japanese
4. Be able to translate sentences and short texts from Japanese into English and vice versa
5. Be able to type East Asian characters on a computer and master basic related IT skills
6. Be able to respond to aural comprehension questions in Japanese
7. Be able to conduct simple dialogues in Japanese
Syllabus
The module will consist of 8 student contact hours per week. These will comprise:
1. Introduction to new grammatical points,
2. Practical exercises based on new grammatical points,
3. Listening comprehension,
4. Reading and translation. At the outset of the module, students will be taught the two Japanese syllabifies (hiragana and katakana) and will subsequently be introduced to basic kanji characters .
