Module summary
This module aims at the acquisition of the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in modern Japanese. The emphasis is made on the aural-oral and written communication skills as well as thorough mastery of the basic grammar and structures. Japanese scripts (hiragana & katakana) are introduced together with basic Chinese characters (kanji). For further details see Department of East Asian Studies websiteObjectives
On completion of this module students should have acquired a basic understanding of Japanese grammar, familiarity with the two Japanese phonetic scripts and about 50 'kanji' characters. They should have acquired proficiency in elementary written and oral Japanese and listening skills.Syllabus
Students will have two contact hours per week. The module will begin with an introduction to the two Japanese syllabaries, hiragana and katakana, followed by weekly lectures on Japanese grammar. The weekly practical class will cover drill exercises, listening comprehension, conversation and script, including a total of approximately 50 kanji characters.
