Module summary

This module builds upon, and further develops, the oral, aural, reading and written language skills developed in EAST1703 (or equivalent) and seeks to extend and deepen students' knowledge and understanding of the Thai grammar, syntax and basic vocabulary. It will extend students' ability to read and write short passages in the Thai script and to communicate on subjects they are likely to use in everyday situations.

Objectives

This module will allow students to further develop their Thai language skills. It will also enable to develop their understanding of essential aspects of Thai culture, traditions, religions, and history.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Comprehend and use a range of basic and more sophisticated grammatical constructions, showing a good command of Thai grammar and syntax;
2. Read and translate short texts on a number of topics covered on the module from Thai into English and vice versa;
3. Comprehend authentic spoken Thai relating to the topics covered and respond on these topics using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical constructions;
4. Produce structured pieces of writing on a number of topics covered during the semester.
5. Explain historical and contemporary events within the cultural, religious, political, and societal contexts of Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
6. Organise time effectively and work independently to consolidate material covered in class;
7. Show intercultural understanding and awareness of Thai cultural contexts;
8. Adopt effective and proactive language learning strategies.
