Module summary

THIS MODULE IS USUALLY ONLY AVAILABLE TO INCOMING EXCHANGE STUDENTS WHO ARE ONLY IN LEEDS FOR ONE SEMESTERIf you have already taken a beginners' Chinese class at the equivalent level of EAST1020 and would like to continue with your Chinese you can take this module to further develop your spoken and writing skills. You will have two classes a week with a native Chinese speaker and work through a textbook. The course covers conversation, new grammar and vocabulary and approximately 800 new characters in total. You will also have a tape to practise listening on your own and if you do this and hand in your written work regularly you should be talk with your Chinese friends, be able to get along in Chinese for survival, write a simple passage of approximately 500 characters in Chinese and read a Chinese newspaper. Objectives

To consolidate and develop receptive and productive Chinese language skills from beginners level
To acquire intermediate-level Chinese structures, vocabulary and characters
To gain confidence and increase competence in the use of written and oral Chinese at intermediate level.

Skills outcomes
Ability to recognise and reproduce more characters; be able to communicate with Chinese speakers for survival in a variety of situations beyond ab initio level; be able to translate from and into Chinese using a greater variety of constructions and vocabulary beyond ab initio level.

Syllabus

The module will introduce new constructions and vocabulary to build on beginners level Chinese and reinforce existing knowledge of the language by constructing and practising it in more complex sentences.
