Module summary

- Are you going to have an English teaching experience at some time in the near future? - Are you worried that you don't know where to start in planning and teaching English? This module will equip you with all you need to get started in the practice of English language teaching. By the end of the module, you will have developed knowledge and skills in teaching grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, and the four skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening. During the module you will get the chance to explore debates around teaching language, and to reflect on your own and others' beliefs about teaching performance. Teaching is by seminar, with many hands-on tasks in which you get the chance to try out and reflect on practical classroom activities.

Objectives

On completion of this module, you should be able to:

- describe, use and critically evaluate the effectiveness of a range of methodological options for developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills;

- describe, use and critically evaluate a range of techniques for presenting and practicing new language;

- demonstrate understanding of the principles underlying these techniques;

- identify and critically evaluate the underlying rationales for approaches taken in a range of current ELT materials;

- critically evaluate your own and others' teaching performance.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Appraise the rationales for different language teaching and learning approaches to address a specific teaching and learning context.

2. Analyse and apply different language teaching strategies that address the needs of a specific language teaching and learning context.

3. Evaluate and reflect on one’s teaching performance, and determine steps for professional development.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Effectively organise and implement a lesson plan that addresses achievable learning objectives to a specific group of language learners

2. Employ different communicative skills to collaboratively work with peers in the design, implementation, and evaluation of a language learning lesson.

3. Critically reflect in, on, and about their teaching, by drawing on the theoretical, contextual, and practical aspects of language learning and teaching.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In-class: students engage in critical discussions on the topics, and engage in video analysis of English language teaching lessons.

Practical: Students receive formative feedback on their lesson plans, as well as on their microteaching performance.
