Objectives

The module aims to provide an opportunity for students to develop a personal interest in an aspect of language learning and education through engaging in independent study which is supported by seminar discussion and individual tutorials.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to plan, execute and report on a small scale research project in the field of language learning and education.

Specifically, they should be able to:
- Identify appropriate methods of data collection and analysis
- Describe research undertaken
- Present and evaluate findings orally and in a written report
- Evaluate the quality of their own research
- Identify the impact of the research on their own knowledge of the field.

Skills outcomes
- Planning and organising project work/small scale research
- Identifying appropriate and relevant means of investigation
- Data analysis
- Oral presentation
- Academic report writing.


Syllabus

The project will be in the field of English, language learning and education. The focus of the project will be determined through consultation with the module tutor.

The three seminars will cover:
1. Choosing a topic, formulating research questions, writing a rationale
2. Identifying relevant literature; how to review the literature; the relevance of a literature review, planning the literature review
3. Research approaches and methodology, ethical research, research project planning.

Private study

Students private study will be guided by the framework for the project work established in the seminar work and will be supported through discussion at the individual tutorials.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through individual tutorials by the final year project supervisor.
