Module summary
In this module you will explore, in depth, an aspect of education that particularly interests you. This might relate to your next stage of study or professional training. You will be able to connect theory, policy and practice and examine the relationships between these. Your project could be an empirical study in a classroom or other education setting or could be primarily desk-based research.Objectives
The module aims to provide an opportunity for students to develop and research a personal interest in an aspect of education through engaging in independent study which is supported by seminar discussion and individual tutorials.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to plan, execute and report on a small scale research project in the field of education drawing on the skills developed earlier in the programme through research methods training modules such as EDUC2102.
Students should be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of links between theory, policy and education practice;
- Demonstrate scholarship in the identification of research questions and in the planning and evaluation of research;
- Identify appropriate methods of data collection and analysis;
- Describe research undertaken;
- Present and evaluate findings demonstrating critical analysis or results;
- Evaluate the quality of their own research;
- Identify the impact of the research on their own knowledge of the field.
Syllabus
The project will be in the field of education. The focus of the project will be determined through consultation with the module tutor.
The three seminars will cover:
1. Choosing a topic, formulating research questions, writing a rationale.
2. Identifying relevant literature; how to review the literature; the relevance of a literature review, planning the literature review.
3. Research approaches and methodology, ethical research, research project planning.

Private study
Students private study will be guided by the framework for the project work established in the seminar work and will be supported through discussion at the individual supervisions. Private study will include fieldwork as appropriate to the project.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
