Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate critical understanding of:- the nature and design of educational research; the diversity of traditions;
- paradigms and other concepts informing educational and social science research;
- the role of surveys and questionnaires in educational research;
- the function and role of probabilistic and non-probabilistic sampling procedures;
- the use of experimental approaches in educational research; the use of case studies in educational research;
- the purpose and nature of interviews and naturalistic observation within the context of various kinds of research;
- different modes of recording and analysing observational data;
- the use of documentary and secondary sources;
- basic concepts in descriptive and inferential statistics.
Skills outcomes
The ability to organise and conduct research activity in educational contexts.
The ability to assess critically research activity conducted by others.
Syllabus
This module is intended to act as an introduction to educational research methods. As such it will offer students the opportunity to explore a number of cognate themes and issues within educational research on two levels. The first level concerns the broader philosophical and educational research on two levels. The first level concerns the broader philosophical and socio-political questions around the nature, purpose and functions of educational research. The second level concerns the broader philosophical and socio-political questions around the nature, purpose and functions of educational research. The second level concerns the methodological dimensions of educational research and will focus on specific approaches such as surveys, experiments and case studies and methods such as interviews and observations. During the course of the module, students will be encouraged to develop a critical understanding of the linkages between these two levels through both theoretical and practical engagement. In turn this will allow for critical reflection upon a number of emerging and recurring issues around what constitutes educational knowledge, its construction and evaluation.

Private study
The private study is composed of working through the online materials (90 hours) combined with further reading and practical exercises (100 hours). A further 98 hours is allocated for assignment preparation.The independent online learning is supported by weekly tutorials which may be conducted face to face, asynchronously online, synchronously online or by email according to the individual student's circumstances and preference.
