Module summary
You will study how research is planned, carried out and disseminated within the context of your specific area of interest. You will consider the notion of evidence-based practice then explore a range of resources for finding relevant published research. Tools for evaluating the quality of various types of research will be introduced and employed. You will consider how best to present research findings. Throughout the module you will consider and develop your own plans for independent research.Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will, for their particular academic and/or professional context within education:- understand evidence-based practice in the context of education
understand the contribution of high quality research to evidence-based practice
- be able to make effective use of resources and facilities to locate published research
- be aware of the different types of research and their characteristics
- understand how to evaluate the validity and reliability of different types of published research
- be aware of the key components in research design
- be familiar with issues in conducting ethical research
- understand a range of procedures for collecting data
- be able to use tools to review and evaluate published research
- be familiar with strategies for enhancing the quality of research
- understand how to present and disseminate research findings
Learning outcomes

Syllabus
Indicative content:
This module is designed to follow-on from EDUC5060M Getting Started: Research Questions and Approaches in Education.
Evidence-based practice and its place in educational contexts. The origins of evidenced-based practice and its recent prioritisation in education. Examination of initiatives and approaches to evidence-based practice, e.g., What Works (government initiative), the aims and purpose of organisations, e.g., Sutton Trust, Education Endowment Foundation, Best Evidence Encyclopedia, etc..
Finding and evaluating research. Identifying and locating published research. Making the most of the University library’s
support, facilities and data bases.
Different types of educational research. Evaluating the validity and reliability of different sources, e.g., professional reports (e.g., Joseph Rowntree Foundation, etc.), journal articles, web sources, etc.
Comparing and contrasting research approaches. Examination of elements of published research to identify different approaches, e.g., how previous research is used (e.g., in a literature review), use of theory, data collection methods, presentation of findings, etc.
Critiquing published research. Using quality criteria (e.g., GRADE, PRISMA, CONSORT, etc.) to evaluate published research and to inform future plans for research.
Aspects of dissemination. E.g., academic writing, poster design, planning a presentation, using social media (web, blog, wiki page, etc.) etc.

Private study
Independent online learning – teaching and learning will utilise the VLE and the Library. Learning activities and resources will be provided on the VLE. Discussion Boards, Journals and Blogs will be used to facilitate students sharing and discussing aspects of their learning. Online learning will be supported in the seminars (face-to-face and online).Private study time will be spent in preparing the module assignment.

The module assignment is a review and evaluation of two contrasting pieces of published research in the academic area and/or professional context in which the student is interested. The purpose is to ensure that students have a good understanding of different approaches to educational research and of their characteristics, to inform their own research.
