Objectives
By the end of this module teachers will have:-- an understanding of current thinking and theories pertinent to language development in deaf and hearing children including bilingual language development;
- a familiarity with various approaches to analysing signed and spoken languages and of the linguistic terminology needed for their description;
- an understanding of the impact of deafness on the social, emotional and learning needs of young deaf children and implications for effective early years/nursery provision;
- an awareness of the types of complex needs which can be associated with deafness and of implications for assessment and diagnosis, appropriate audiological support and communication approaches;
- an understanding of the diverse linguistic and cultural experience of deaf children/young people and associated issues of identity and affiliation.
Syllabus
This module focuses on child and language development and the potential impact of deafness on early childhood experiences and development of deaf children is critically explored. The implications of and problems with this research will be discussed.
Deaf children's potential for developing sign language and English and the acceptance of both languages as an appropriate means of communication and education and explored. To facilitate this, students will become familiar with ways in which spoken and signed languages can be analysed and described.
Students will also gain an insight into the cultural and linguistic aspects of deafness and the views and experiences of the adult deaf community. Issues for the educational support of deaf pupils with additional and complex needs will also be examined.

Private study
This module is taught through a distance approach.This includes:
- a module study pack which requires 250 hours of private study time.
- 40 hours of assignment preparation (this will include school visits and observations).
The 6 hours of lectures and seminars are given during a day school at the University.
