Pre-requisite qualifications

- A minimum of two years relevant postgraduate professional experience.
- Have basic ICT skills (to be able to use e-mail, word processors and the WWW) and to be able to use computers routinely in their academic work.
- To demonstrate independent facility in the use of ICT with appropriate technical support.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- understand in depth the relationship (s) between learning theories and new technology;
- evaluate critically their personal experience of using technology for learning.

Syllabus

This module examines a variety of approaches to learning with new technology and their theoretical basis. Each approach is illustrated using a software application, and participants will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through workshops, discussion and seminar.

Range of issues to be covered:
- microworlds and Constructivism;
- collaborative learning;
- adaptive tutoring systems;
- modeling and learning;
- role play and communication.

The seminars are 12x2 hour synchronous seminars and
the on-line learning takes the form of 12x2 hour asynchronous discussions

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each participant will be expected to make a contribution of between 500-1000 words per session, about a specific issue in the asynchronous discussion. Each person will be expected to contribute to the synchronous seminar.
