Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- critically review a range of literature in order to develop a comprehensive awareness of the attitudes, abilities, skills and knowledge needed by a competent TESOL practitioner in their professional context;
- select appropriate evidence from their own work during the year which will enable them to make an informed judgement (against criteria developed above) on personal progress towards a solid practical TESOL knowledge;
- comment critically on the evidence selected;
- identify areas of professional practical knowledge requiring further development;
- outline realistic, and context specific plans which will enable them to work on these areas;
- present all of the above in a way that enables the reader to understand decisions made at each stage;
- use the evidence in the portfolio to support and illustrate a coherent and analytical commentary on the sequence of study.

Syllabus

The dissertation will involve the construction of a personal learning portfolio and a coherent and analytical commentary on the learning and understanding it evidences.

The portfolio format requires reflection on the year's work, together with further critical study on the literature relating to professionalism in TESOL. It requires candidates to link areas studied during the year to their own personal practical knowledge development.

This should enable candidates to further develop knowledge and skills in TESOL as well as the skills for managing their on-going professional learning.

Private study

Tutorial Support:
- Additional tutorials may be held by agreement between the student and tutor.

Private Study:
- 20% of this time to be spent on reading on professional development in TESOL
- 30% on compiling evidence for the portfolio relating to modules studied
- 30% on further research on professional context
- 20% on writing up the portfolio.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Tutorials held near end of semester 1 to identify possible topics for the portfolio.
- Regular presentation and feedback on progress made in developing the topic during Research Methods course in early semester 2.
- Regular individual supervision meetings from second half of semester 2 through to completion of portfolio.
