Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- identify a topic of personal or professional interest in the area of TESOL;
- engage in discussion with a tutor concerning how this topic might be investigated;
- under supervision, carry out reading and study, and, if appropriate, research on this topic;
- under supervision, write up the study in an appropriate form.

Learning outcomes
Students who complete this module will have the knowledge needed to carry out a search of the literature on a chosen topic and an understanding of how to carry out small scale empirical research. By the end of the module they will have gained competence to engage in:

- critical reflection on own learning processes, relating knowledge gained on programme to own developmental needs.

- identification of present and future learning and professional development needs and formulation of action plans for future professional development.

- relating theoretical knowledge gained on module to the practical needs of future teaching contexts.

- development of independent inquiry (including using databases and the Internet) and data collection skills (basic research methods).

- selecting and organising data to provide rich documentation of experience, including using IT to present findings in professionally appropriate ways.

- presenting through sharing of findings in class sessions and mini-conference.

Syllabus

Students negotiate their dissertation on an individual basis at a dissertation proposal meeting held with their Academic Tutor.

Students will be required to attend the 'Research Methods for TESOL' module.

Students will be allocated a dissertation supervisor who will discuss their dissertation proposal and meet with them on a regular basis as the study progresses.

Tutorial Support:
- Additional tutorials may be held by agreement between the student and tutor.
Private Study - indicative of what might be expected:
- 20% of this time to be spent on reading on professional development in TESOL
- 30% on data collection
- 30% on data analysis
- 20% on writing up the dissertation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through the tutorials related to the 'Research Methods for TESOL' module and the supervision meetings.
