Module summary
This module has two parts. The first will give you the skills you need to describe language in terms of sounds, words, grammar and discourse. The second part looks at the language used by learners and provides some background about how learners' language can be analysed in terms of sounds, words, grammar and discourse and how this can be used to understand learners' language development.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- Discuss the relevance of language description and analysis to TESOL generally and specifically in their own ELT contact.
- Carry out basic analyses of samples of spoken and written English for discourse, syntax, lexis, phonology and register.
- Apply their analytical skills to a range of text types including ELT materials and 'authentic' texts, and texts from within and outside the language classroom.
- Discuss the application of their skills in language description and analysis to the selection of texts and activities for the teaching of language.
- Discuss the interpretation of learner language data in terms of language learning processes.
- Relate the use of language to the learning of language.
- Collect, analyse and interpret learner data.
- Assess the methodology of empirical studies of language learning.

Syllabus
This module introduces participants to the analysis of texts at the levels of discourse, syntax, lexis and phonology, and structuring the resulting information through frameworks provided by register analysis, discourse analysis and conversation analysis. Participants will also consider the application of language analysis techniques to texts produced for TESOL learners, and for native speakers of English, in order to use the skills and knowledge gained to assist with making principled and appropriate decisions about content and materials for English language teaching.
Participants will learn how to collect and analyse samples of learner language data using the frameworks of the analysis of text outlined above. Participants will develop skills in using the analyses of learner language as a basis for making judgments about the language development and learning/teaching needs of individual students.
