Module summary
This module looks at the use of corpora in the teaching of English language. It will show you what kinds of corpora are available and how to use them to identify what language specific groups of learners need to learn. The module will also help you understand the ways in which you can use the results of this analysis in the classroom and how learners can be helped to use this kind of software in their own learning.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- understand the phraseological approach to language;
- be aware of available corpora and tools;
- have hands-on experience in the use and exploration of corpora for English language teaching and learning - be able to review corpus-informed materials;
- be able to review corpus-informed materials;
- understand the principles of data-driven learning;
- understand the use of corpora as a reference for NNS (and NS);
- be aware of critical issues in using corpora in the English language classroom.
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes will include:
- understandings of phraseological approaches to language;
- awareness of the different corpora available for analysis;
- awareness of critical issues in corpora use;
- understanding of the principles of data-driven learning.
Skills outcomes
Students completing this module will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities to:
- critically engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms;
- make effective decisions in complex and unpredictable situations;
- learn independently.
Syllabus
This module will introduce students to the applications of corpus-based approaches to the analysis of authentic texts, both written and spoken, drawn from a variety of domains. The module will also familiarize students with various search engines available for corpus querying. We will look at the implications of corpus-informed materials for curriculum design and self-access use. We will also examine the principles of data-driven learning and the implications of this approach for learner training in corpus used in an ELT/EAP context.
Session content is as follows:
Session 1: Introduction to corpora and the corpus approach;
Session 2: Contributions from corpora to our knowledge about language;
Session 3: Using corpora in the design of teaching materials;
Session 4: Data-driven learning; students engaging directly with corpora and concordances;
Session 5: Corpus building; designing and creating specialist corpora for language analysis and teaching;
Session 6: Looking critically at corpus approaches.
