Module summary
This module is an introduction to research in teaching English to speakers of other languages.Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will:- be aware of different paradigms of TESOL research and of their characteristics
- be aware of the key components in research design and of the relationships among these
- be able to devise effective research questions to investigate TESOL issues
- be aware of the purposes of a literature review
- be aware of different approaches to TESOL research and be able to select critically from amongst these
- be familiar with procedures for conducting ethical research
- understand the role of sampling in TESOL research
- understand a range of procedures for collecting data
- have experience of analysing quantitative and qualitative data
- be familiar with strategies for enhancing the quality of TESOL research.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, participants will be able to demonstrate understanding of:
- the difference between research paradigms
- the features of good TESOL research design
- the features of good research questions
- a range of research instruments for data collection in TESOL
- a range of techniques for data analysis.

Syllabus
This module introduces fundamental concepts in the conduct of TESOL research and takes participants through the process of conceptualizing and designing a sound research proposal in the field of TESOL.
The module begins by examining various paradigms in TESOL research before starting to consider in more concrete terms elements in the research process and key concerns in relation to each.
Participants will thus work in turn through the development of research questions, the selection of appropriate and ethical research methods, the design of tools for data collection and strategies for analyzing qualitative and quantitative data. The module will also examine strategies for enhancing research quality, including issues related to the effective dissemination of research.

- Students will spend 7 hours a week on preparing for seminars in terms of guided reading, and carrying out assigned tasks (42 hours).- Students will spend 90 hours on assignment reading and preparation.
