Objectives
On completion of the module students should be able to: explain the main features of L2 learning theories and current trends in the SLA field; relate SLA theories to TEFL classroom practice; explore SLA literature to obtain insights for EFL instruction; discuss in detail one area of SLA research of particular interest to them.Syllabus
This module provides a critical survey of research and theories in second language acquisition. Topics to be covered include: basic SLA research methodology (e.g. questionnaires, correlation studies, longitudinal and cross-section designs); differences between child L1 and adult L2 acquisition (e.g. age, affect, cognitive development); descriptions of interlanguage development (e.g. order of acquisition); the role of L1 in SLA (e.g. L1 interference, similarities and differences between L1 and L2); factors affecting second language learning (i.e. linguistic, cognitive, environmental, physiological); individual learner differences (e.g. motivation, aptitude, personality, learner strategies); theoretical models of SLA (e.g. UG and SLA, cognitive approaches, information processing); Relationships between SLA research and classroom teaching
Methods of assessment
2000 word critique of one article selected from a SLA journal is required (30%). A final assignment of a 4000 word paper (70%).
