Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to- understand current theories of oral and written language processing, and their implications for second language learning and teaching;
- understand and be able to critically evaluate current beliefs about the design of tasks, and about their impact and use for second language learning;
- analyse and evaluate the assumptions underlying the teaching of oral and written skills in their own context, and how these may affect classroom language learning;
- critique the design of tasks and other language learning activities;
- design, adapt and evaluate language learning tasks;
- use appropriate methods to document and evaluate the use of tasks for oral and written skills, and learners' development;
- identify the potential of current research for development of their own teaching and materials.

-studying learner and teacher use and understanding of oral and written tasks;
-interpreting learner and teacher behaviour in relation to the wider culture;
-analysing and evaluating TESOL data.

- Second language reading skills and reading development.
- Tasks for reading.
- Second language writing skills and writing development.
- Tasks for writing.
- Discourse grammar and vocabulary in the context of oral and written skills.
- Second language listening skills.
- Tasks for developing listening.
- Speaking skills and their development.
- Tasks for speaking.
- Combining oral and written activities.
- Evaluating and developing tasks in text books.
- Ways of using tasks in classrooms.
