Module summary

This module provides you with an opportunity to engage critically with and develop in-depth understanding of theories and approaches to teaching oral and written skills in TESOL. The module also encourages you to consider your own teaching experiences and contexts and to reflect on how you might apply some of the ideas and concepts discussed in your own classroom teaching.

Objectives

On completion of this module, you will be able to:

1. understand current theories of oral and written language processing, and their implications for second language learning and teaching
2. understand and be able to critically evaluate current beliefs about the design of tasks, and about their impact and use for second language learning;
3.analyse and evaluate the assumptions underlying the teaching of oral and written skills in your own context, and how these may affect classroom language learning
4.identify the potential of current research for development of your own teaching and materials.


The module is organised into topic areas of second language listening, reading, vocabulary, speaking and writing. Each topic will be covered over one or two 3-hour sessions. Before class you will watch pre-recorded lectures, read specific research papers or book chapters. In class you will participate in task-based discussions to clarify and apply the key ideas in the input and to relate new learning to your own professional teaching contexts and experiences. After class you will have recommended follow-up reading.

1.in-depth, specialist knowledge and understanding of theories and approaches to teaching oral and written skills in TESOL.
2. an ability to apply theories and techniques to your own context.

1. Search for, evaluate and use a variety of information sources to help strengthen the quality of arguments.
2.Creatively and critically design and evaluate language learning tasks relevant in teaching oral and written second language skills.
3. Communicate complex TESOL-related concepts and arguments to colleagues and to an academic audience.
