ELEC5620M Embedded Microprocessor System Design

Pre-requisite qualificationsStudents are required to have at least ONE of the following pre-requisites: ELEC2645 or 2665 (for Level 4 undergraduate students) or ELEC5681M (for MSc students).
This module is not approved as an Elective
ObjectivesStudents will explore the options for advanced embedded system implementation and study the operation of System-on-Chip development systems. The module provides an opportunity to develop skills in the use of contemporary design tools which support the optimization of embedded processor architectures.
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Explain a range of options for embedded system implementation.
2. Use System-on-Chip development systems.
3. Apply optimisation tools to embedded processor architectures.
4. Use support tools to design and implement embedded microprocessor systems.
Topics may include, but are not limited to:
Operation of the various aspects of an EDA system (ARM DS-5) including support programs, design environment, compilers, assembler, linker and debugger with an ARM Cortex A9 within a DE1-SoC using C coding and exploration of compiled assembly language
Use of watch dog timers to automatically recover from erroneous operation
Hardware and software optimisation to create high performance embedded systems
In-depth understanding of stack operation with function-based code
SIMD processing for intensive DSP algorithms
Illustration of embedded systems concepts through the control of internal and external peripherals
Implement case studies and design problems, taken from (for example) digital filters and audio processing
Mini-projects to demonstrate the skills and techniques learnt through the module

Private studyStudents are expected to use private study time to consolidate their understanding of course materials, to undertake preparatory work for seminars, workshops, tutorials, examples classes and practical classes, and also to prepare for in-course and summative assessments.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackStudents studying ELEC modules will receive formative feedback in a variety of ways, including the use of self-test quizzes on Minerva, practice questions/worked examples and (where appropriate) through verbal interaction with teaching staff and/or post-graduate demonstrators.
