Module summary

Refugee Narratives affords students the opportunity to reflect on the current refugee crisis by looking at a wide range of writing by and about refugees, migrants and stateless people. While the module features contemporary narratives about people seeking asylum in the UK, it also looks at earlier narratives of Jewish and Palestinian displacement. As well as focusing on literary works, we will also explore key political and philosophical texts on issues such as statelessness, citizenship; the limits of the nation-state; humanitarianism; cosmopolitanism; the ends and limits of sympathy and compassion; and human rights.

Objectives

Refugee Narratives aims to give students a critical understanding of the growing field of Refugee Studies through a combination of lectures, seminar discussion, weekly discussion posts and essays.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrated an understanding of a range of literary texts about refugees, statelessness and citizenship
2. Demonstrated an understanding of key philosophical and political texts relating to Refugee Studies
3. Learnt how to place literary and critical/ philosophical texts in dialogue with one another

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. The ability to use written communication effectively.
5. Critical reasoning and the capacity for independent thought and judgement.
6. Research skills, including the retrieval of information, the organisation of material and the evaluation of its importance.
