Module summary

The Creative Writing Project gives you the opportunity to make your own creative work a major part of your degree. Projects in this strand can take an especially wide variety of forms: a collection of poems, a short story, a novel extract, memoir, creative non-fiction, and more. As part of your project, you will submit a critical reflection based on extensive research in which you discuss your creative aims, processes and decisions and the literary context of your work.

Objectives

This module is predominantly student-led independent research and writing. In preparation for that work, students will attend regular creative writing workshops led by the module convenor throughout semesters one and two. Topics to be discussed in these sessions will range from resources for independent research to writing aims and methods in practice-led research. Initial plans and specialist reading lists will be discussed in individual supervisions in semesters one and two. A Project Synopsis and Writing Sample will be submitted at the end of semester one, marked by the supervisor, and then discussed in supervisions. The final Portfolio and Critical Reflection will be submitted at the end of the second semester, and marked and moderated by the supervisor and another member of the School’s teaching staff.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, you should be able to:
1. Identify and propose an appropriate topic for a creative writing research project.
2. Apply research methods through the guided work of planning an autonomous research project in the chosen writing form(s).
3. Demonstrate skills of time management and prioritisation by taking responsibility for an autonomous research project.
4. Demonstrate skills of independent working, selection, and consideration of ethical issues in managing creative writing research.
5. Produce an extended piece of creative writing, or portfolio of creative writing pieces.
6. Produce an academic reflection to accompany the creative writing, enhancing existing skills of critical and flexible thinking.

Syllabus

The Creative Writing Project is a 40-credit, two-semester module that represents the culmination of a student’s undergraduate studies. It allows students to pursue independent research projects in creative writing, reflecting and developing the skills and interests they have acquired throughout their degrees. During this module students discuss salient readings and media that focus on the development of researched writing projects. They also identify and independently study material relevant to their individual research project areas, on which they receive assistance and support from their supervisors.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The monitoring of student progress on this module will take place through the required submission of unassessed pieces of work to supervisors at strategic points during the module, as well as peer discussions of unassessed work in writing workshops. Work discussed with supervisors includes a formal plan of work and title and a writing sample, as well as oral reports on progress. There are mechanisms in place to allow individual supervisors to flag up potential problems with individual students.
