Objectives
To provide students with a basic understanding of research rationale and methods in the field of systemic family therapy.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- gain familiarity with significant quantative research in the systemic family therapy field;
- report the relatives strengths and limitations of quantitative research; hypothesis testing vs. exploratory approaches therapeutic process vs. outcome evaluation research; including single case, RTC and meta-analysis in relation to the field of family therapy and general psychotherapy;
- demonstrate the statistical and methodological understanding necessary to evaluate these different approaches to research;
- conduct a basic quantitative data collection and report the results appropriately;
- show the limitations of published research studies and deduce what can reliably be concluded from the results.

- Measurement and manipulation of variables.
- Basic statistical techniques and their role in research.
- Paradigms of research and the design of research within a systemic framework.
- Review of approaches in published research studies.
