Module summary
Beginners Japanese 10 credits is for students who have not previously studied Japanese. The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing and an introduction to Japanese culture. You may want to learn a new language or you may already have an interest in Japan - whatever your reason, this module provides a fascinating insight into the country and the language and will equip you with some basic language ability and intercultural awareness.Objectives
This module introduces students to Japanese and develops their ability to communicate at a beginner's level. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for this level. They should also develop an awareness of Japanese culture and be able to advise a friend on how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic 'faux pas' when speaking Japanese in the situations covered by the module.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered
- Extract accurately the key information from audio and or/visual material
- Understand and make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker in specific contexts
- Demonstrate a basic awareness of grammar
- Demonstrate a basic awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Japanese and English
Syllabus
The module covers topics such as:
- Exchanging personal information about yourself and your family
- Understanding and expressing numbers, the time, days and dates
- Shopping, including describing price colour, size and location
- Talking about likes and dislikes
- Talking about daily routine and leisure activities
- Cultural awareness
