Module summary

This module is for students who have already achieved AS/CEFR B1 or equivalent and wish to take their Japanese to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a good level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing in both formal and informal registers. The module includes a response to a reading stimulus task which is an open book assessment and allows for considered response. Communication skills which will be developed include discussion, intonation and pronunciation and reporting skills.

Objectives

To consolidate knowledge of the Japanese language at upper intermediate/AS/CEFR B1 level and develop skills and competence up to A Level/CEFR B1+. On completion of the module, students should be able to exchange information on familiar and unfamiliar topics both orally and in writing, understand longer, more complex reading and listening material and demonstrate knowledge of key aspects of Japanese culture.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Communicate in the target language in a range of social and professional contexts
2. Demonstrate greater understanding and knowledge of upper intermediate grammar with appropriate usage
3. Demonstrate proficiency in listening through accurately extracting key information from audio sources
4. Demonstrate proficiency in reading through accurately extracting key information from written sources
5. Produce pieces of writing at upper-intermediate level in the three Japanese scripts with an appropriate degree of accuracy and sophistication
6. Demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Japanese and English

- Formal and informal language
- Giving and asking for opinions, explaining reasons
- Evaluating opinions and drawing conclusions; agreement or disagreement
- Talking about cause and effect
- Using imperative and prohibitive forms
- Research and analysis of Japanese through film, poetry, song, manga, anime or media
- Through further study of the Japanese language students will learn about more nuanced facets of Japanese culture and social interaction.
- Situational Japanese – sports events, moving house, eating habits – diet/health, visiting someone’s house

Private study

Guided independent study each week (20 hours), review of the lesson (10 hours) , preparation for the weekly classes (20 hours) and for the assessment (30 hours).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Weekly homework, peer and tutor feedback, mock tasks as preparation for exams at the end of the semester. Opportunities for script practice, tutor and peer evaluation using online platform Padlet.
