Module summary
Elementary 10 credits Japanese is for students who have completed a beginners module and/or spent some time in Japan and are keen to develop their language skills but only have 10 credits available. The focus is on achieving a reasonable level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. You will develop your speaking skills in particular.Objectives
To consolidate knowledge of Japanese at beginners level and develop skills and competence towards CEFR A2 level/equivalent. On completion of the module students should be able to identify the main language points in familiar contexts and hold conversations in Japanese on the topics covered. They should feel confident in using their Japanese and in accessing a variety of authentic resources. Students should also develop an awareness of Japanese culture and be able to advise a friend on how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic 'faux pas' when speaking Japanese in the situations covered by the module.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered;
- read short texts in Japanese;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- understand, and make themselves understood by, a sympathetic native speaker in specific contexts;
- demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Japanese and English;
- understand the rules of writing kanji, write a limited number of words using the characters introduced in the module and produce short pieces of independent writing;
- demonstrate their knowledge of key areas of grammar.
