Module summary

This module is for students who already have a good grade at A-level (A2) and wish to take their French to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a high level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing in both formal and informal registers.Communication skills which will be developed include debating and presentation skills, discussion, role play, interview techniques, and writing a commentary/ essay on a contemporary issue. The module includes a presentation based on private study, which provides the opportunity to research an area of personal interest through the medium of French, whilst the essay/commentary will be based on a module topic. FLTU 1345 is taught weekly with a 2 hour seminar (with a break) in a more communicative integrated skills approach. Students wishing to continue studying French, as a Discovery module, at this level, have a choice between FREN1010 and FLTU1345FREN1010 is the core language module of the first year of the French degree programme. It is taught via fortnightly lectures linked to weekly seminars with a strong grammatical focus and weekly speaking practice workshops.For more information consult the module catalogue. Objectives

On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- extract accurately information from a wide range of materials
- develop skills and competence beyond A2/CEFR B2
- maintain a lengthy conversation in French on a range of topics
- show spontaneity in expressing and defending their ideas in French
- research, analyse and present a prepared aspect of their field of study in French
- use appropriate idioms and expressions in French; scan and skim French texts relating to their field of study
- understand points of view and implicit meanings
- write freely for a variety of purposes in French, adapting style and register appropriately.

Learning outcomes
On completing this module students would be expected to have achieved a level which is post A-level +1.

They should have increased their vocabulary and knowledge of idioms in the topics covered; increased their general knowledge and understanding of these areas especially in the context of modern French culture and institutions; and increased their knowledge of, and ability to use, grammar accurately.
