Module summary

Elementary 10 credits German is for students who have completed a beginners module and/or spent some time in a German-speaking environment and/or reached CEFR A1 and want to improve their German but have only 10 credits spare. The focus is on achieving a reasonable level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing and a deeper understanding of German culture.

Objectives

To consolidate knowledge of German at beginners level and develop skills and competence towards CEFR A2 level/equivalent. On completion of the module students should be able to identify the main language points in familiar contexts and hold conversations in German on the topics covered. They should feel confident in using their German and in accessing a variety of authentic resources. Students should also develop a deeper awareness of German culture.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Make themselves understood by a proficient language speaker over a range of everyday topics
- Read texts of a reasonable length
- Understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in daily life, in work and at university, and be able to understand the main points of audio-visual material when the delivery is at a reasonable pace
- Describe experiences and impressions orally and in writing
- Demonstrate greater understanding of key grammar points with appropriate usage
- Demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of German and English

Private study

Guided independent study each week, weekly homework, review of the lesson and preparation for the weekly classes. Preparation and practice for the in-class tasks and final exam.
