Module summary
Beginners Italian 10 credits is for students who have not previously studied Italian. The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing and an introduction to Italian culture. You may want to learn a new language, you may already have an interest in Italy or you may be planning to travel - whatever your reason, this module will equip you with some practical language skills and intercultural awareness. Please be aware that if you are interested in progressing to elementary level, you should take a 20-credit module in beginners Italian.Objectives
This module aims to introduce students to Italian and gradually develop their ability to function at beginners' level. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar expected at this stage. They should also develop an awareness of Italian culture.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered
- extract accurately the key information from written, audio and or/visual material
- understand and make themselves understood by a proficient language speaker in specific contexts
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar and use the present tense of regular and some irregular verbs
- demonstrate a basic awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Italian and English
