Module summary
This module is for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and wish to take their Italian to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in Italy and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Italian society and some of the major cultural and linguistic differences.Objectives
With their beginners' competence in Italian, students taking this module should be able to build on their existing knowledge of the language and develop and extend their ability to communicate and function in Italian.They should also further develop their understanding of Italian culture and know how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking Italian and/or when in Italy.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered;
- read and understand short texts in Italian;
- produce short pieces of independent writing in Italian;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- understand, and make themselves understood by a proficient language speaker in specific contexts;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- demonstrate their knowledge of key areas of grammar including using the present and future tense, the perfect and imperfect tense and the conditional tense;
- demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Italian and English;

3. Shopping, asking for prices and discounts, giving opinions, making comparisons and asking and indicating preferences
3. Talking about own studies and student life and/or work experience
4. Expressing feelings and emotions
5. Arranging to meet, accepting and declining invitations in a formal and informal situation
6. Making formal and informal phone calls
7. Health and illnesses: understanding common instructions and commands
8. Talking about and describing where one lives
9. Talking about free time activities and holidays
