Entry qualifications to appropriate French programme, or equivalent linguistic competence (this would normally be grade A or B in French at A level (equivalent to CEFR B1+)This module is approved as a discovery module

Module summary
This is the first year language module for the post-A level pathway degree programme in French, which enables students who already have a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) level B1+ equivalent to a UK A level grade A or B to progress to a solid CEFR B2 level.Language learning on this module has a strong grammatical focus,structured around lectures and weekly small group practical classes practising all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.Objectives
1. To develop the students’ language skills, cultural understanding, and intercultural competence in Francophone contexts up to CEFRL B2+ level.2. To aquire functional and discusive competence, allowing them to communciate in different situations in both spoken and written registers
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate understanding, in written and spoken, forms authentic texts of a wide variety of genres and registers
2. Produce clear and detailed written texts in French on a wide range of topics and complex issues, expressing and developing opinions and demonstrating awareness of appropriate genre and register.
3. Express self clearly and in detail on a range of topics, defending viewpoints and evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of different possibilities.
4. Demonstrate mediation skills appropriate to this level by conveying detailed information and arguments reliably, within his/her fields of professional, academic and personal interest.
5. Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes communication with other speakers possible without significant strain for either party

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Regular homework (approximately 3 pieces per semester) marked by a tutor and with individual, personalised written or voicemail feedback. Practice written examination mid semester. Feedback from these formative assessments can be applied to summative exam.- The assessed 'Contôle de fin d’année/ written course work is completed at the end of semester 2. Devoirs and mock written task are all opportunities for individualised feedback before the final contrôle.
- Feedback from practice pod/vod cast submitted in both semesters act as feedforward to speaking exam. Mock speaking practice also organsied in class in weeks 21 & 22.
