Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- understand the history of France in Africa in both colonial and post-colonial periods
- gain a comprehensive understanding of 'Francophone Africa'
- extend knowledge of the wealth and diversity of Francophone culture in a comprehensive perspective.
Syllabus
Since independence, Africa has experienced political, economic and cultural changes in response to the growing expressions of national identities and to the role of France in Africa. French colonisation has produced scars and wounds that have marked African identity. The significance of French especially in Africa's political and cultural life can hardly be over-estimated.
The module is a critical survey of colonial and post-colonial 'French Africa'. The areas of concern will include ex-colonies from North and Sub-Saharan Africa and some reference will be made to countries where there have been literary and artistic responses to historical and political developments.
The course will consider
- the history of French colonisation, influences and the impact of the French in Africa;
- the responses, reactions and perspectives expressed in various Francophone literatures;
- the language policies and cultural issues inherent in post-independence Africa and
- the political role of France in Africa and the concept of la francophonie.
