Module summary
Many finalists come to feel that they could be graduating in a few months and entering the job market with plenty of language-handling practice and ability in the areas of literature, journalism, biography etc., and yet not much at all in the areas which their career may well involve - that relating to business and professional activity. This module works with authentic materials from different sources (written and audio-visual), involves the use of interactive skills and aims to familiarise you with French business practice. It will deal with such documents as curriculum vitae, lettres de motivation, advertisements, report wrting and business letters. Topics around which these documents will be arranged could be la publicité, le marketing, le tourisme etc. This module is taught in French and will be assessed by a closed exam in the January exam period and a take-home piece in June based on a dossier of documents available to students a week prior to submission. The final mark will be combination of content and linguistics ability. In addition, each student will make two oral presentations on current business news.Objectives
To refine linguistic and communication skills in order to attain a high level of proficiency in a professional context, by developing a French Business vocabulary and by handling complex grammatical structures and stylistic and formal conventions in business-related communication, both oral and written.Learning outcomes

Syllabus
This module is aimed at introducing students to French professional life, building on awareness and skills acquired during the Year Abroad. It will focus on two major themes:
1. Working in France: (applying for a job - CV, lettre de motivation, interview practice, human resources - business correspondence, telephone communication, report-writing, French companies.
2. Marketing: advertising, launching a new product, packaging, market research, market trends, consumer habits, promotion strategies.
The course will use authentic materials from different sources (written and audio-visual) and will involve inter-active skills. Students will be encouraged to do some independent research, and to present their findings in individual or group presentations and in writing.
Regular homework (in the form of short, concrete tasks) will be set and marked for feedback and evaluation purposes, and the module will be formally assessed in both exam periods (with a closed exam in January and a take-home exam in June).

Listening and reading French business news weekly to prepare for a class presentation.Preparation for seminars, including reading online material and completing assessed and non-assessed exercises.
