Module summary
Students will undertake a research or a work-related project. The aims of the project will be agreed at the outset and students will work towards meeting the agreed aims and delivering the expected results. Half of the module hours should be allocated to the project with the remainder devoted to private study. Project hours can include attending seminars or presentations organised by research clusters or conferences relevant to the project area. Attendance at seminars/conferences should not be more than 50 hours in total and should be agreed with supervisor.Students will generally gain greater self-awareness and confidence in their ability to work with others, to take individual responsibility for planning and management of their work and to appreciate how their knowledge and skills in geography can be transferred and applied in a range of diverse areas.NOTE: If students find their own project then these must be approved by the module leader before commencement of project. Students without projects will be allocated to one based on an expression of interest system. Allocation to a project is not guaranteed and, depending on project availability, allocation may be to a research or to a work-related project irrespective of any preference stated on the expression of interest form.The project topic for this module should be clearly different from that chosen for the Dissertation module A list of possible projects will be made available to students prior to the start of the new academic year Admission to this module normally requires an overall average module mark at Level 2 of 60 per cent or above.Objectives
The objectives of the module are to:1. let students work in collaboration with an academic member of staff, or in collaboration with an organisation (usually) outside the University, on a theme, investigation or project relevant to academic study for a degree in Geography;
2. let students design, negotiate, record and manage their work in cooperation with project supervisor/s ;
3. give students an opportunity to focus on tackling a problem, or group of problems, which can be solved to a greater or lesser degree by a student who applies his or her energy, knowledge and skills in a concerted, systematic and managed way to effect a solution in the time and with the resources available.
