Module summary

Students will undertake a project with a school organisation outside the University. The aims of the project will be agreed at the outset and students will work towards meeting the agreed aims and delivering the expected results. Students will generally gain greater self-awareness and confidence in their ability to work with others, to take individual responsibility for planning and management of their work and to appreciate how their knowledge and skills in geography can be transferred and applied in a school setting.

Objectives

On completion of the module, you should be able to demonstrate:
A. Skills in the preparation of classroom material, and its effective presentation.
B. An awareness of the role of teachers both in the classroom and more widely in school.
C. Some insights into changing ideas in education and how they play out in schools.
D. Skills in the preparation of reports and reflective writing.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have applied their knowledge and skills in geography in a classroom setting and will have prepared a set of learning materials of benefit to the school.

This will involve planning, managing their work, reflecting on its merits and shortcomings, assessing results and drawing conclusions. They will write reports, keep a journal/reflective log and give a presentation to a supervisor on their work.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have:
(i) gained experience of working in a school setting;
(ii) developed a range of generic skills and specialist skills;
(iii) demonstrated an ability to manage their time, resources and project;
(iv) improved their ability to judge what is necessary and what is unnecessary for a given project by applying critical assessment of the work that they are doing.

Syllabus

- Introduction to the Geographers Into Teaching module - a one hour lecture at start of Semester 1.
- Each student will then be placed in a school in Leeds and will discuss the aims of the placement with the module tutor. Several progress meetings with the module tutor will be held throughout the session.
- Assessment of each student will take place at the end of teaching in Semester 2.

Private study

Students will work independently on a project - levels of work-based supervision will vary depending on the nature of the project and the placement.

- Classroom hours: 60 hours
- Preparation of Classroom materials and activities : 60 hours
- Research, preparation and writing up of project report: 50 hours
- Completion of journal/reflective log throughout the project: 15 hours
- Preparation of oral presentation: 8 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress is monitored by:
1. meetings with an academic supervisor who will discuss and monitor progress with a student.
2. support from the school organisation hosting the placement.

Students will also complete a reflective log (using the VLE ‘journal’ tool) in order to record and reflect on their school based experience.
