Module summary
The aim of this module is to provide students with the technical skills required to build web-based mapping applications. The module will introduce: cornerstone web-development technologies including HTML, Javascript and CSS; client-side mapping libraries; database management systems; and server-side technologies. The module focusses on skills development through the use of hands-on practical coding tasks. Students will build a web-based GIS application of their choice for their final project.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of industry-standard technologies used for web-based data storage, manipulation, visualisation and analysis.
- Build a complete web-based GIS application within a well known software solution framework.
- Demonstrate transferable skills relating to web development and database management.
- Demonstrate an awareness of web server management and security issues
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Recognise the essential elements comprising an interactive web-based GIS application
2. Demonstrate effective database management, file management and web-development skills
3. Identify and explain security considerations relevant to use of web-based technologies
4. Develop well-documented and efficient code in client-side and server-side programming languages
5. Modify and combine existing code elements to create interactive web-based GIS applications
Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
6. The ability to generate ideas, demonstrate originality and imaginative thinking to devise a web-based GIS application
7. The ability to select, use, and troubleshoot appropriate web-based technologies to achieve specific tasks
8. The ability to use technical skills in relation to spatial data which extend beyond traditional desktop GIS software.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback will be provided during practical activities where students will be encouraged to post outputs to devoted unit-by-unit discussion boards. This will allow for peer critique in addition to staff comments. Note that the outputs requested here will differ from those required as part of the summative assessments.The module leader will also be on hand to provide support (email / Teams / discussion board / etc) during the teaching weeks, in advance of assessment. Whilst not directly formative assessment, this will ensure that the students receive feedback / support on matters of need.
