Module summary
This module addresses environmental Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications. The water industry has seen a rapid uptake of GIS and this topic is discussed and explained in depth. Within a changing environment it is important that we are able to understand water demand and usage. We will use digital elevation and land cover data to look at environmental topics such as flood modelling, land suitability and locating contaminants. This module provides an excellent introduction to applied geographical research using environmental data.Objectives
On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate:- Understanding of how GIS can be applied in a number of real world contexts;
- Understanding of the major issues and problems in the water and land use management sectors;
- An ability to solve key environmental problems of the day;
- An understanding of the interconnections between environmental problems and socio-economic geodemographics (human/environment interfaces);
- An ability to design a decision support system for applied environmental management.
Learning outcomes
Develop and understanding of environmental contexts and how GIS can be applied to solve and support environmental problems of the day.
Skills outcomes
Generic C&IT skills, using everyday work examples. In addition, the implicit programme level skills.
