Module summary
This module introduces the ways in which geographic information is used in different planning contexts including urban and regional research. The module covers the key issues which drive the retail store location process and the methodologies retailers use to find optimal locations. This module enables the understanding of the importance of geography and GIS in modern retail and business organisations.Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate:- an awareness of key information sources;
- an understanding of the development and application of GIS and modelling methods
- skills in how to extract data from key sources and use relevant computer software for research and data analysis;
- skills in how to develop and implement GIS projects within a range of applied contexts.
Learning outcomes
-Students will develop an appreciation of the role of GIS in applied planning contexts.
-An awareness of the range of spatial data resources to support the planning process.
-Experience of GIS based analysis in one or more of the planning contexts.
- The ability to communicate independent research findings in formats appropriate to the range of stakeholders in the planning sphere.
Skills outcomes

- information processing (including IT skills): literature searches;
- data manipulation (including IT skills): analysis of data (especially spatial data); statistical methods;
