Objectives

On completion of the module students should be able to demonstrate:
(1) An understanding of the principles of remote sensing of the biophysical environment; (2) An understanding of how remotely-sensed images are structured and stored; (3) An appreciation of approaches to digital image processing for the analysis of remotely sensing images of the terrestrial environment; (4) A knowledge of digital image processing applications using ERDAS Imagine software.

Syllabus

1 Introduction to digital image processing for environmental remote sensing. 2 Physical principles of remote sensing.
3 Remote sensing systems. 4 Digital images from remote sensing systems. 5 Digital image pre-processing 1: spatial, geometric and scale transformations. 6 Digital image pre-processing 2: atmospheric corrections and remote sensor calibration. 7 Image-domain filtering for feature extraction from remote sensing images. 8 Methods image segmentation for environmental remote sensing. 9 Approaches to extracting features from remote sensing images 10 Frequency-domain filtering of remotely sensed images. 11 Student presentations

Teaching methods

Lectures 11 x 1hr, 11 x 1hr additional lectures/seminars, 10 x 2hr workshops/laboratory practicals.

Methods of assessment

3000 word essay by 24 May (50%). Presentation of the above essay in week ending 10 May (10%). 4 computer practicals (40% @ 10% each). Non submission by the due date will incur the normal university penalties.
