Module summary
This module skills students up to be able to demonstrate: - A detailed knowledge of the principles of web-based GIS; - A working knowledge and understanding of client side and server side technologies- How to set up a working custom GIS-based web client and server.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- demonstrate an detailed knowledge of the principles of web-based GIS;
- demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of web map servers and web feature servers and clients for them
- set up a working custom GIS-based web client and server.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to have an understanding of server-side technologies including PHP and Postgres as well as have an understanding of Javascript.

- Introduction: Why GIS on the web
- Using Google Maps to generate simple maps
- Advanced use of Google Maps
- Simple Web Mapping using server-side technology
- Dynamic maps using server-side technology
- Using remote data sources: Web Map Servers
- Databases and spatial data
- Combining map servers and other databases
- Adding locational data to web-based maps
