Module summary
This module enables students who have completed an A1 CEFR level (GCSE) to develop their language skills up to A2/B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students will build on their German language skills to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as grammar and vocabulary. Particular focus is put on consolidating oral skills . The module is not suitable for complete beginners or advanced students (above B1 CEFR).Objectives
This module aims to- consolidate and further develop students’ German language skills and their ability to use the language on a basic level. Students will complete the A2 level and begin with the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- broaden students’ everyday vocabulary and knowledge of basic German grammar.
- improve students’ pronunciation and fluidity.
- Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of German-speaking countries to encourage an informed interest in German-speaking cultures.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
LO1. Understand and apply basic vocabulary and expressions as well as some topic-specific vocabulary
LO2. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of basic German grammar such as sentence structure and cases
LO3. extract accurately key information from written texts as well as audio and/or video material
LO4. understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
LO5. demonstrate some knowledge about relevant aspects of modern German-speaking countries.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will receive regular formative feedback on smaller tasks that they complete as part of their weekly seminar preparation to develop all four linguistic skills, e.g. reading short texts, watching short videos, completing quizzes or grammar exercises. Feedback on the weekly tasks will be given as written individual, peer-feedback or collective feedback to monitor student progress and to further encourage autonomous learning. Short reflections on language-learning strategies will heighten the students’ awareness of their own language learning process.Students will also receive individual and collective feedback on their oral language production in seminars, for example on pronunciation, fluency and accuracy, in order to help the students to gain more confidence in their oral language skills and to prepare them for their oral exam.Methods of assessment
