Module summary
This module will provide the student with a basic understanding of the range of pathophysiology and diagnostic procedures associated with respiratory and sleep science.Objectives
This module will give the students a foundation in the underpinning principles of Respiratory and Sleep Science. Students will develop the knowledge required to apply to practice. Utilising a blended learning approach students will be provided with both theory and practical sessions to enhance learning.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:
1. Describe the role of Respiratory and Sleep science in relevant patient pathways
2. Describe the work of the healthcare science workforce and explain how it contributes to the patient pathways and screening programmes relevant to Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Sleep Science.
3. Extend broad basic and clinical sciences knowledge, including an understanding of normative values and apply that knowledge with respect to Respiratory and Sleep science.
4. Explain the application of safe and effective clinical practice in physiological measurement associated with Respiratory and Sleep science
5. Explain the basic principles underpinning the routine investigations and procedures carried out in the diagnosis and treatment of Respiratory and Sleep diseases
6. Explain the basic principles of physics and mathematics that underpin healthcare science.
Skills outcomes
During this module students will develop the underpinning knowledge and skills required for clinical placement. Specifically skills relating to respiratory and sleep science.

Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology applied to Respiratory and Sleep sciences including
- Respiratory system
- Sleep Wake Cycle and common sleep disorders
- Pathophysiology of key body systems related to Respiratory and sleep sciences
Introduction to respiratory and sleep sciences
- Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
- Anatomy and physiology of central and autonomic nervous systems
- Control of respiration during sleep
- Control of Sleep wake cycle
- Pathophysiology of lung diseases
- Pharmacology and therapeutics
- Investigations and procedures carried out in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease including sleep disorders
- Charactersitics of equipment and their evaluation
- Calibration and quality control procedures
- Communicable disease and microbiological hazards in the respiratory laboratory
- Methods of sterilisation and disinfection
- Physiological measurement systems used to measure respiration during sleep
- Calculation of normal ranges

Private study
Students will receive private study throughout Semester 1 and 2a. During independent online working students will be required to utilise online resources, complete MCQ’s and workbooks (directly related to each weeks lectures/tutorials/practical) and their learning will be consolidated in subsequent contact sessions. During private study students will be encouraged to access and utilise original research and other scholarly articles in order to support learning and prepare for summative assessments.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress will be monitored through formative processes which include the workbook, VLE discussion boards, weekly MCQ’s and interactive class tests as previously outline.Methods of assessment
